Dartmoor

Described as England's last wilderness, Dartmoor is a National Park. The main moor is about 1000 feet, while the tors (the high points) rise to 2000 feet. In contrast to the bracken and heather covered uplands, there are a number of agreeable small villages round the edge of the moor.

Exmoor

Exmoor is smaller than Dartmoor, and the moor has been protected both by the National Park and its own geography. Little has disturbed the moor in the way of modern life.The National Park covers 265 square miles, and has three different types of countryside - coastal, pastoral moorland and heathland.

National Trust - Knighthayes

Knightshayes Court, designed by William Burges, in 1869. Built for Sir John Heathcote-Amory, who made his money from lace. Beautiful topiary garden.

Arlington Court

Set in the thickly wooded valley of the River Yeo. 1400-ha (3500-acre) Arlington Court estate with a 1822 house, built in the neo-classical style. Perhaps the outside of the house is a little plain, but inside are a number of collections brought together by Miss Rosalie Chichester who owned the house. These include shells, costumes, model ships, pewter. In addition the National Trust houses their carriage collection in the stables of Arlington Court.

Watersmeet

Gardens - Rosemoor (RHS)

RHS Garden Rosemoor is a garden of national importance in a charming rural Devon setting. Lady Anne Berry gave Rosemoor to the RHS, and the original eight acres have been greatly developed. Lady Anne had already accumulated a wide range of plants, the RHS has added extensive herbaceous borders, a Formal Garden, a potager, herb and cottage gardens, the Foliage and Plantsman's Garden and extensive stream and lakeside plantings.
